Do You Really Need To?

Hellopplz. Round 12 brought us 2 MASSIVE supercoach scores. Both over 200 and both by two players slipping under the radar…..until now!! Lindsay Thomas and Jack Riewoldt are the two. Also note that these two players are forwards. Do you really need to trade them in? I’ll give my view on the matter in this little piece.

Lets start of with Lindsay. A typical small forward. There to get the crumb, get a few goals and apply defensive pressure. Don’t neccessarily equate to supercoach scores. If you look at the scores he’s pulled this year, take out the MONSTER 217 and what other scores do you come up with? Next highest was a 96. Look beyond that and you see nothing. Scores vary from as low as 31 to as high as 69. Most of the scores are in the 40’s. Don’t think he should be brought in. Can’t really be used as a cash cow this late in the season either. Has a negative breakeven but with many coaches running out of trades, would really let his 217 slide by right now.

Now we come up to one of the shining lights at the Tigers this year. JRoo would be a much better option for people looking at uniqueness and X factors come finals time. Being a Key Position Player does make his scores very up and down. But something he does more often than Thomas is that he can actually hit that ton, and hit it quite often. He’s hit it 5 times this year which isn’t that bad. But considering 4 of them have been in the last 5 weeks, he is in fine form. The one he didn’t was still a serviceable 90. Lowest score was a 56 (twice) but his highs definately outdo his lows. For a 22 year old, he has very good hands especially in a one on one contest. Has had past issues with his ego but Hardwick seems to have that in check this year. One of those reasons why he has stood out from the pack this year. Is a little pricey at 476k but has a negative breakeven. If you think he can keep it up, would jump on now before he is out of reach.

Big Machines & Maybe A Wonderwall?

Hellopplz once again. Since there hasn’t been much activity on sca101 I’m going to try and post a few new topics up here during the weekend to keep our loyal readers happy. Can you guess what this article is about just from the title? Hope you said ruckman and not Barry Hall!! This article is dedicated to a few underappreciated ruckman in the supercoach world. One had a stunning last year, One is second highest scoring ruckman going into round 7 and the Other is a breakout star looming on a poor team this year. First 2 are obvious in the big Hmac and Jamar but I’ll let you think about the third one for a little bit. Sorry if it seems a tad longer than my other posts but hope you enjoy the little extra read. Maybe grab lunch/dinner and eat while you read.
Towering at 2.03m tall is the big old reliable Hamish MacIntosh. How he is selected in only 16,000 odd teams is fairly suprising as Kreuzer is well over 50,000. He is fairly consistent for a big man and is doing well in a rebuilding team. Hasn’t had a game under 10 disposals but none over 20 either. His ruck work and round the ground skills is what is saving him. He is taking a fair few marks and has been moved up forward a bit more with the injection of Goldstein into the team. A reliable pick for those who are looking to cash in Seaby after his injury or looking to upgrade any of their other ruck picks. He is a top 5 ruckman in the comp both in real life and in supercoach so isn’t that risky pick.
Mark Jamar at an age of 27 is entering the prime of his ruck years. In a rebuilding Melbourne side and is probably their best ruckman available, looks to have good job sercurity this year. His scoring is looking like he will be another rollercoaster ride. 3 rounds so far he has scored 100+ but 2 rounds he has scored 60+ (3 if you count this round). He is a typical tap ruckman which can do this. Jolly is a tap ruckman and his main goal is just to tap the ball down. Jamar is the same in the sense and will go missing some games possession wise just to concentrate on his ruckwork. But like any typical tap ruckman, when up against a team with no ruck division (*cough Hawthorn) they should dominate and rack up an easy 100 which he did round 1. But his other 2 100’s came against collingwood and kangaroos. Looks to be a decent smokie if you want to back a dark horse this year in the ruck.
The moment of truth has arrived. I’ll let you take a moment to lock in your answers and lets see what happens. Drumroll please…… The breakout potential this year in the ruck is……. Ivan Maric (hoorah hoorah). WHO? I was saying the same thing until I was pointed into his direction but a fella who was thinking outside the box. A 24 year old in a big 1.98m and 102kg body seems worth a look. Might turn you off that he plays for Adelaide, but he might be that X factor who could do wonders once the crows hit their straps. He is more like Hmac and not Jamar. He has been around that 10 possession mark for the entire year so far. A stunning game against Melbourne pulled him a 121 with only 13 hitouts and 18 disposals. Came close to the 100 last week against the tigers with just 11 possessions (+28 hitouts). Pretty impressive isn’t it? If he can set one more game alight within the next week or two, will be on alot of people’s watchlist incase a ruckman goes down. If Adelaide can go on a winning streak, he might just be a Wonderwall….
If you had noticed the title is based off Two songs. Can you guess which songs? One is a given but the other might be a little tougher. If you have read this far, hope you enjoyed the read.

Richmond Stars???

Hellopplz once again. Long time between posts I know but think it’s time to let people know that playing for a poor side doesn’t always mean your a bad supercoacher. These two guys have been proven premiums over a number of years but seem to be left in the dark this year. Chris Newman and Brett Deledio are the guys I’m trying to get across.

Chris Newman has been a proven and consistent premium over past few years. Without Bowden though, many thought he would struggle with a relatively new backline to work with. Those people were right to an extent, but don’t expect Newman to take it lying down. After a very dismal round 1 and a week’s rest has scored back to back 100’s past 2 games. At a price of $485k, looking pretty juicy for those willing to back him to get back to his best. Except for round 1, Newman has averaged a respectable 21 disposals mopping up down back for the tigers. With a poor Richmond side, can expect the ball to be down there alot. Newman is their go-to-man down back and will get a fair few possessions and we all know he can kick.

Brett Deledio should be considered one of the young gun midfielders of the competition along with Pendlebury, Gibbs and Selwood. Anybody would be licking their lips if they had any of the 4 in their team (which will be a little piece in the weeks to come). Somehow Deledio has been placed a step below the other 3. Why? Probably because he will cop the main tag every week. Apart from the 56 in round 2 (against the young Picken) hasn’t scored below 80 any other time. Even though he has only cracked the 100 only twice so far, he also started last year off slowly. We all know how that turned out. Is usually a good kick but didn’t show it on the weekend against the cats (80 sc points from 34 possessions). When left untagged, he is very damaging. Don’t think many will consider trading him in but at least keep him on your watchlist. A youngster who is durable and doubt he will stay below 500k for much longer ($486k before round 7).

Tackling Kings

This blog will be dedicated to the underrated tacklers of the competition. Andrew Swallow and Domenic Cassisi are who I’m talking about. Swallow is at a decent 499k entering round 5 while Cassisi is as a low 415k. Both facing the same breakeven at 107, which is well within their reach. Both slip under many supercoachers radar as they aren’t big names. Cassisi is the captain at port but was overshadowed by Burgoyne most of his career. This is just to get their name out their for our loyal readers.

Swallow is a nice young player with a big future ahead of him with the building Kangaroos. Coming off a breakout year but being a key midfielder alongside Harvey and Anthony to help steer the Roos in the right direction going forward. Last year Swallow picked up a stunning 152 tackles in all (averaging roughly 7 tackles per game). Has started this year right where he left off with 34 tackles in just the 4 games. He’s one to look out for if he is firing. He is very capable of massive scores, highlighted last year by a  177 point effort in round 21 against St. Kilda. You have to admit that is pretty darn impressive for a young kid fighting for a spot in the team at the start of the year. Still can’t handle the tag as well as he can, but with Harvey and Anthony there, I wouldn’t expect Swallow to be tagged so hard most of the time.

Domenic Cassisi has long been one of my favourites down at Port. If you have seen him play, you know he plays with his heart. He is one real tough nut who isn’t afraid to get down and dirty. With 162 tackles last year, should be considered a Tackling King. He may not be the best ball handler in the competition, but if you can get alot of tackles, they can add up. Has had a fairly slow start to the year, but this is a good thing for those considering cassisi (me being one). Knowing he can average over 100 is always a plus (done in 2008 with an average of 104). May be a tad inconsistent with a few scores bobbing under 60 but is generally a guy who gets you 80+ week in, week out with some scores 130+. Not a big fan of kicking the ball, but the ratio of kicks to handballs has come down so far this year. Expect him to pick up his game next few weeks and don’t expect him to be that cheap for much longer.

Another Step Up

This little piece is going to be about 2 guys from 2 very different team. These guys don’t play the same position but are looming to take that next step up into premium status. 1 is from Melbourne and the other from Geelong. I’m talking about Brent Moloney and Harry Taylor.

Brent Moloney is in his prime as an AFL player. At the ripe age of 26 looks to be able to finally break into that elusive premium status. An up and coming midfield doesn’t hurt his chances either. Doesn’t play a tagging role but usually goes head to head against the other teams 2nd or 3rd best player. He has been averaging a decent 22 possessions a game and a respectable 6 tackles a game. Does have a good running game and gets alot of clearances and inside 50’s for it. A great unique pick up for those thinking outside of the box.

Harry Taylor is a typical Key Position Player. Doesn’t get alot of possessions in a packed Geelong defence, but when he does, boy does he make it count. He may be a very up and down rollercoaster ride this year, but if he can replicate the game he played against Port, he may just be worth it. He’s got a good AFL body and isn’t afraid to take marks in a pack. Does like zoning off his opponent and get a few tackles. The only thing that may worry people is that he handballs alot more than he kicks and that he may not get those 20+ possession games every week (but every fortnight is very possible). He is a risky pick but one worth taking for those who like a punt.

Premium-To-Be Midfielders This Year?

This little post is going to be about 2 midfielders I believe have what it takes to crack premium status after a few good weeks. Both have had pretty good previous years and I expect big things to come from these 2 guys in the future. Both have gone almost unnoticed this year with only about 5,000 selections shared between these 2.

Kade Simpson is the first I will be talking about. Entering into his prime years at 26 years old, he’s been in the system for a while. Without Judd in the lineup, Simpson has had a few great weeks highlighted by a 141 point game last round. He has also been able to add 4.2 to the blues scoreboard. Without any real good options up forward, the blues are relying on their midfielders to kick goals. Has also had 18 tackles and 19 marks. This shows he has had a good all round game this year so far. With Judd coming back, should only help him as he won’t be getting any attention. Teams are starting to see the impact he has on games and have began tagging him. Not to much effect though.

The next big thing down at Adelaide seems to be a little known kid going by the name David Mackay. This guy doesn’t do much other than get 20+ possessions a game. He will get a good 2 or 3 tackles a game with a few marks here and there but not much else. How does he pull out 100+ scores when he prefers to handball over kicking? Look at when he kicks and you will have your answer. Being left open in space on the wings, you think he would take advantage of the kicking. With Vince stealing all the spotlight at Adelaide after rocking the fantasy world last year, this guy has gone well under noticed. And if he stays this way, would be one to keep an eye out next year.

Underpicked Guns

Just wanted to write a little piece on a couple of guys who i consider severly underpicked.

Paul Duffield – with a tad under 10,000 picks he seems to be quite unique. coming off a break out year is always something to be cautious about but when a player can run and kick like him, doesn’t seem like a big risk. He was great last year and this year shows no signs of slowing down.

Heath Scotland – The guy is a possession machine. started this year with 2 30+ possession games. Only in 5,632 teams so is very unqiue. Is 30 mind you but doesn’t seem to be slowing. Last year only 2 games which he played were below 15 possessions, so you know he can rack the ball up. He is a tad injury prone but when you have the potential to score 130+ games often, i think he’s worth it.

Matt Priddis – This guy is underrated for what he brings to the table. In less than 4,000 teams seems to be odd. Was great last year even when under a tag. scores did dip but with kerr back, should see less of a tag at least. He wins alot of contested ball and is a tackling machine. Might need to only see about his kicking and he will surely be in alot more teams than that.

Brad Green – The most suprising for me. With only 1,355 teams choosing a former premium is shocking for me. I considered him for my own team but couldn’t fit him in. He is one of the only true fantasy scorers in a poor demons line up. He not only prefers to kick than handball but with davey moved to the midfield, will see him not cop the normal tag. This can only get better for him. A move up forward every now and again shouldn’t hurt his scores as he can kick goals. At the age of 29, still knows how to find the footy. Would keep an eye on him as we all should know he can score. Looks like the Green Fantasy Premium of old.

Hello

Hello readers of sca101. My name is Hellopplz and I will be a very casual writer for the blog. I am not one to write long blogs but instead nice short little pieces on players that I feel need more attention for them. I am rarely going to talk about popular picks or hyped up players as I feel they get enough attention. I’m sort of  letting people step back and see the wider selection of players out there. I will post something up later today about a few unqiue picks that I am suprised not many had faith in to select. I have not selected these players but instead kept a close eye on them.
